New Orleans-based photographer and Ratsalad regular William Greiner sent in this pair of photographs & this poem, after a long & eerie silence. They were taken near the broken levy on Lake Ponchartrain, a few days after the hurricane. For regular infusions of his new work, you can check out his image-blog.

The birds were flying,
the birds were dying...smoke filled the air.
The silence was silenced,
by the sound of choppers everywhere.
