In the Virtues and Vices series, Carrie Ann Baade presents newly spun narratives which reinterpret religious and mythological tales. Gods, rulers, demons, and common men are each confronted with issues of confounded morality. These paintings explore commendable traits which are also contemptible. Baade is interested in the fanciful and idealized world of the mind, and how a good idea may expire once exercised beyond the confines of one’s head….both literally and metaphorically. Dubbed “Imaginative Realism,” these paintings are cut from the pages of art history and layered into a trompe l'oeil surrealism. Often traveling around the globe in search of forgotten paintings to quote and interpret, her works manifest an entirely original vision, rich with the confluence of cultures and time periods. |
